Assistant principal harassing a transgender boy in Harrison County BOE
Assistant principal who 'harassed a transgender boy by cornering him in the men's bathroom and insisting he use the urinal to prove his gender' is set to return to his role after being suspended
The Harrison County Board of Education voted Tuesday evening to suspend an assistant principal without pay until February for an incident involving a transgender student
That suspension will end on February 8th when he will be allowed to return to school, pending he meets four requirements determined by the board.
It was after student Michael Critchfield, 15, said Livengood harassed him in a male-designated bathroom on November 27 and ordered him to use the urinal before saying, 'You freak me out'.
'The board, with my recommendation, believes there should be a date certain on his unpaid suspension. I'm recommending that Mr. Livengood be reinstated on February 1 with certain stipulations that must be met prior to his reinstatement,' Harrison County Board of Education Superintendent Mark Manchin said at a meeting Tuesday. 'Those will be reduced to writing and shared with Mr. Livengood and the administration.'
The ACLU released a statement in response to the meeting.
“We’re encouraged by the productive discussion we had today with Superintendent Manchin. [The student] and his family were heartened with the outcome of the meeting and are now looking forward to working with the school district to make a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ students in Harrison County," the organization said. "Because of his bravery and willingness to come forward, we now have the opportunity to replicate and expand on inclusion practices in other counties across West Virginia to ensure this never happens again to anyone under any circumstance.”
